Quick heads up

This is not the worlds most serious blog, but sometimes we find things that are worrying and need to be shared.

This was removed from one of my 749RS'. It locates the lower yokes onto the steerer tube and is also where the pin from a under-yoke paddock stand locates. It's likely that this is the original part from 2005 and has been subject to an unusual amount of abuse, but you can see it's in no condition to be such a critical part on a bike. It's difficult to see here, but if you enlarge the pic you can see two cracks go almost right through the bolt.

As I said, it's likely that this damage has been caused by over-enthusiastic use of a paddock stand and this bike will have been on this kind of stand for most of it's life. No amount of over-engineering by by Ducati would have prevented this damage, but please check yours.

See part 5 in the fiche. The yokes and fork tubes provide all the stability at the front of the bike. If this bolt was to fail, all the force would be carried by the forks - something that was never intended.

If you have a bike that has 749R yokes, please check this bolt.
